A research group led by Professor Yusuke Maeda of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, has revealed collective motion of dense bacterial population shows chiral vortex pairing with frustration. The frustration alters the transition point of vortex pairing order but chirality stabilize co-rotational pairing patterns. This study elucidates the interplay between chiral collective motion of active matter and the emergent order of vortex dynamics.
